From Charlene Chapman Madden:
Dear Grand Singers, I am returning this fall with a very obvious medical issue. So rather than have to deal with questions and conversations, I thought it best to share with all of you just what the situation is. At the end of May I was diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer in the middle of my face--lip to nose to cheek--on the left side. The cancer cells were removed through the Mohs procedure, cutting away the skin until pathology indicated no more indication of cancer presence. This took 3 surgeries in June, leaving me with a significant open wound. I had surgical repair in mid July which involved moving skin from other parts of my face to cover the wound. I am just about 2 months into a probable six month healing process. I have several incisions healing, some swelling and discoloration. For physical healing I need patience. For the emotional, I need strength and trust. I am wearing a face mask when outdoors because I cannot expose the area to the sun. I wear the mask indoors if I do not wish to show my face to others. I will not wear a mask when singing. I know I have your support and understanding.
In friendship, Charlene Chapman Madden
